The agentic workforce

AI agents for business, clearly explained

An AI agent is software that carries out one defined job in your business, such as preparing proposals or drafting month-end commentary, working from your own rules, content and examples. ‘Agentic workforce’ is our name for a set of these agents working alongside your team. Each one has a named person who owns it and reviews its work.

Three safeguards on every agent

  • A named owner. A member of your team is responsible for the agent and reviews its work before it is used.
  • Tested on your examples. We test it against your own past work before it is used on live work.
  • Measured against your starting point. We record how the job performs today, so that you can see whether the agent has made a difference.

What an agent is, and what it is not

The term ‘AI agent’ is often used loosely, and it is therefore worth being precise.

An agent is

  • Built for one process, such as proposals or month-end reporting
  • Working from your rules, your content and your past examples
  • Referring anything unusual to a person
  • Reviewed by its owner before its work is used

An agent is not

  • A replacement for your people
  • Something that makes decisions on your behalf
  • Permitted to send emails or agree prices independently
  • An unsupervised chatbot dealing with your customers
  • A system that can be set up and left unattended

Most of the agents we build operate with checkpoints, at which a person reviews the work before it is issued. We will always state precisely how much an agent does independently, and we will not present it as more autonomous than it is.

Why a business would build one

The case for an agent usually rests on capacity. Consider a proposal that takes a member of staff several hours to assemble, or a monthly report compiled by hand from three systems. The work must be done, but it rarely requires your most experienced people’s judgement at every step. The agent therefore carries out the assembly, and your people review it and make the decisions.

In practice, an agent makes four differences to how the business operates:

  • Your team spends more time on the work that requires them. Clients, judgement and new business receive the hours previously spent on repetitive work.
  • A process runs consistently each time. The agent follows the agreed steps and refers anything out of the ordinary to a named person.
  • You can take on more work without recruiting at the same rate. When volumes rise, the agent carries more of the load.
  • Your knowledge remains in the business. Where a build captures your best answers and methods in a library or documented steps, that knowledge does not leave when a member of staff does.

How an agent joins your team

We introduce agents one at a time, and each one builds on what the previous one established about your business.

01

Identify the job worth doing

An AI Quick Scan or Opportunity Review identifies which job would benefit most from an agent, and which are not yet worthwhile.

02

Remove unnecessary steps

Before anything is built, we ask whether every step in the process needs to exist. Frequently, some do not.

03

Build and pilot

We test the agent on your own examples and then run it on live work in a pilot, with its owner reviewing everything.

04

Handover

The agent passes to its named owner, supported by a user guide and a trained team. When you add a second agent, it builds on the brand profile and groundwork established by the first.

Questions owners ask about AI agents

If your question is not answered here, please email hello@teamagentic.co.uk and we will reply promptly.

Will this replace jobs?

That is not the purpose for which we build them. Agents take on the repeatable work so that your people have more time for the work only they can do. Decisions about roles are yours, and we will not propose a build as a means of reducing staff.

How independent are the agents?

Most operate with human checkpoints, which means a person reviews the work before it is used. We will state precisely what each agent does without supervision.

What happens if an agent makes an error?

That is the purpose of the owner and the checkpoints. The owner reviews the agent’s work before it is used, and anything unusual is referred to a person by design. Testing on your own examples before the pilot is intended to identify problems early.

How many agents do we need?

Begin with one. The first establishes what works in your business, and each subsequent agent builds on it.

Which AI platform do they run on?

We are not tied to any one provider. We recommend the platform that suits each build, and we can use one you already have if it meets our minimum standards. You license it directly, so the account and the data remain yours.

Platforms we work with

The right AI platform for each build, licensed to you

We recommend the AI platform that suits each build, or use one you already have if it meets our minimum standards. Either way, you hold the licence, so the account and the data stay yours. The results arrive in your own email, files, CRM and finance systems, where your team can check them.
